Holywood trust support
Nithsdale ARC are very grateful for the support of The Holywood Trust who generously donated £20,000 to the club in Autumn 2016 as part of a refurbishment project. The funding was used for renovating several aspects of the clubhouse facilities including structural elements, our main entrance, hall, social space and indoor training area. There are ongoing efforts to seek further funding to achieve our target of also renovating our changing room facilities.

Nithsdale ARC at Nationals.
Three junior rowers represented the region at the British Junior Rowing Championships last week. Double world champion and Olympic medallist Sarah Winckless welcomed “The best junior rowing talent in the UK” to the event, held at the National Watersports Centre in Nottingham. She went on to encourage the youngsters “Sitting on that start line at these Junior Championships will give you the opportunity to test yourself against your peers and take your participation to another level” but also reminding them to enjoy it.
Andrew Dunse, racing with Strathclyde Park Rowing Club partner, was fourth in the Open 18 coxless pairs in a tough A final - narrowly missing a medal over the last 200 metres but came home the top Scottish pair. This strong performance confirmed Andrew’s selection to the Scotland team for the home international regatta, racing in the Junior coxed eights. Nithsdale teammates congratulated Andrew as he represented his country in his last event as a Junior. In the younger age categories, Anderson Black and Rowan Wilson were competing at the nationals for the first time. This was good experience for the young scullers, both putting in solid performances which showed their ability and their calm determination which allowed them respond to the pressure of such a large event, coming 12th and 15th in their age categories. Anderson was competing in both the J14 and J15 classes, with the junior omnium showing his technical skill and demonstrating his speed over a 500m side by side race, only losing technical points on the slalom. Rowan’s time trial in the Women’s Junior 15 scull was strong, bringing her to the C final and her first 2k, where she was third. Coaches Mark and Harvey Buchanan were pleased with the results and were thanked for their time and expertise in preparing the Nithsdale scullers for this major event.

NITHSDALE 2017 REGATTA
Road Closures / Expected Delays
As previously mentioned, the regatta is on the same day as Dumfries gala day “Guid Nychburris”.
Arrival at the regatta may be affected by the Ride Out which will include a cavalcade proceeding along Academy Street and Edinburgh Road near to the access roads for the boathouse in the morning. This should only affect the area for a short period of time from approximately 740am – 840am. Roads are not usually completely shut for this, but delays may occur if you get caught behind the horses!
Departure from the regatta may be affected later in the afternoon due to the town parade starting at 5pm. The main route used for leaving the boathouse (taking Irving Street and turning left on to Academy Street to then leaving Dumfries via Edinburgh Road) should only be affected later on in the parade. Those clubs leaving later than 6/630pm may have to wait until the parade has passed.
We are sorry for any inconvenience this causes in attending the regatta. The exact routes and times of the Ride Out and Parade have only just come to our attention."
Cheers,
Mel

Nithsdale ARC Project Rio Report
Nithsdale Amateur Rowing club held an Open Day on Sunday 24th July, and although the weather conditions weren't very inviting, with heavy showers throughout the morning, there were many very hearty souls who did turn up. For most it was a sport which was new to them but which they all thoroughly enjoyed. First time rower Annelise Chazec from France said ''It was a good experience, the coaches were very experienced and although there was a lot to take in everything was explained thoroughly''. Alice Parker 15, from Dalbeattie High School was also very enthusiastic, a keen sports person who has tried many sports including other water sports didn't let a bit of rain put her off. Alice said ''Everybody was very friendly and approachable and the event was well organised and i'm definitely coming back'. With over 20 people turning up throughout the event and at least 15 signed up for Project Rio, all managed to get on the water and experience rowing in a quad. With 3 boats available everyone was able to have their turn at rowing, although the rain was heavy at times it certainly didn't dampen the enthusiasm of all those that took part.
John Dunse who organised the event said 'Despite the awful weather it was great to see so many new people giving rowing a go. For most it was their first time in a proper rowing boat and the feed back from them has been great. A good number that turned up today have also signed up for Project Rio which is brilliant''.
For anyone who couldn't make the Open Day there is sill time to sign up for Project Rio or even if you just want to have a go at rowing you can contact the club at [email protected] or Twitter @NARC. Taster sessions are available on Thursday evenings @ 6.30pm or Sunday mornings @ 10am for anyone who missed the Open Day.
Its been a number of years since the club held its last open day and although the weather was awful this time and probably put many people off,it is hoped that there will be another Open day during the year. The club would like to thank all those members who helped out on the day, from coaches, coxes, safety boat crew as without your help this event would not have been able to go ahead.
